Biography

Melba Newsome is a freelance writer in Charlotte, N. C. She specializes in writing true life, dramatic narratives, investigative, human interest, health and business features. Her work has appeared in National Geographic, Time, O, The Oprah Magazine, Inc., Prevention, Details, the New York Times, Good Housekeeping, Parents and the Los Angeles Times Magazine, among others.

Writing awards include the 2007 Arlene Award for Magazine Writing, the American Society of Journalists & Authors (ASJA) 2006 Outstanding Business and Technology Article, the ASJA 2004 June Roth Memorial Award for Medical Journalism, the ASJA 2003 Outstanding Article Award for Reporting on a Significant Topic and the Runner Up for the National Association of Black Journalists Best Magazine Feature of 2000.

She is currently working on her first book, a biography of 1930's African-American screen and stage star, Fredi Washington.
